Cloth Diapering- Getting Started :)

Some people at the shower asked me about cloth diapering...I don’t think it was     sarcastic :) So here is a little bit about why Justin and I have decided to give it a try (honestly Justin was the one who really spurred the idea for us). So obviously using cloth diapers will cause less waste. Also if my need to buy new cute diapers is kept in check, it will be cheaper than disposables. Finally, although there are now some more natural disposable diapers, using cloth we don’t have to worry about all those chemicals being up against our baby...this has made me think about other products not just for Rose, but also that we use.

SO ANYWAY...I have amassed a collection of newborn diapers to hopefully use about two months or until Rose is ready for OS (one size) cloth diapers that should last her from about 10 lbs until she is toilet trained. We decided to use OS diapers because it is more cost efficient than buying two or three different sizes of diapers as she grows. Also we are really hoping that the Grovia diaper system works for her. The nice thing about the Grovia is that it is a diaper shell and then snap in soaker pads, so you can reuse the shell and just change the soakers. Also with the Grovia system there are disposable inserts that can be used in place of the cloth soaker pads, that would probably be nice for traveling. These can be flushed, composted (not poo), or thrown into the trash (they will break down much quicker then disposable diapers and it is MUCH smaller than a whole disposable diaper). Then we have some pocket diapers for extra protection...pockets are diapers that can be stuffed with cloth inserts to increase absorbency (like naps and overnight). Also I can stuff the pockets before sending Rose to the grandparents, so they are just like disposables, if that's what the grandma's prefer.

The questions I most often get are about the amount of work it will be to wash them and dealing with poo...
Well I plan to wash the diapers every other day or so. Really the washer does all the work, so as long as I throw them in, we should be good to go :)
And I don’t really know what I’m going to do about poo yet. Breastfeed baby’s poo can be thrown right in the wash, no need to do anything :) After she starts eating solids there are some options...we can get a diaper sprayer (that does seem a bit messy to me) or place a liner in the diaper which would allow liquid to pass into the cloth diaper, but would hold the poo, and then that can all be flushed. Did you know that even with disposable diapers it says all solids should  NOT be thrown in the trash?

Ok so here’s the cute part...pictues of the diapers!!

Our newborn stash:
Prefolds (they need a waterproof cover)...this is probably what most people associate with a cloth diaper, you can pin them if you have a wiggly baby, but from what I have read, just laying them in a cover seems fine for most babies.

Fitteds (they need a waterproof cover)...these snap closed and then you place a cover over them.

Covers...these go over the prefolds and fitteds to make them waterproof, super easy to use, just put on the baby and velco closed! As long as they have not gotten messy they can be reused several times before washing.

XS Pocket and XS AIO...so these are what many consider to be the quickest and easiest to use. The pocket can be stuffed for more absorbency and the AIO is ready just to put right on! These diapers do cost a bit more and need to be washed after each use.

So compare my cloth diapers to disposables:

I have purchased 12 prefolds, 6 fitteds, 2 xs pockets, 2 xs aio's, and 4 covers for about $100.00...this is my newborn collection and should last about 2 months.
The XL case of Pampers at diapers.com put the smallest size diaper at .18 each. This means using 12 diapers a day for 60 days costs $129.60. Plus this all goes in the trash.

When Rose has outgrown her newborn stash, we can use the prefolds to stuff in the pockets or just as rags in the garage. The rest of the diapers can be sold back to other moms. So we will have zero waste :)

Then when she is a little bigger:
Grovia shells, soaker pads

Disposable inserts

Liners

OS pockets: Rumparoozs and BumGenius

We only have a few of the Grovia and OS diapers to see what everyone likes and what fits Rose the best, so we will have to get more of whatever we decide to use as our primary diaper. We'll keep you updated on how it goes!!
